Regarding the patient

We will answer any questions we can with as much information we have available at that time, and are committed to keeping you up-to-date with any changes that occur.

Please provide us the name and phone number(s) of one to two people who will act as the contact person for the family.

Why we need a contact person:

  • To keep patient confidentiality
  • To limit the number of phone calls into the ICU

The contact person(s) will bear the following responsibilities:

  • Talking with the doctor and nurse regularly about the patient’s condition
  • Giving the details of the patient’s condition to other family and friends
  • Collecting well-wishes from family and friends to give to the patient

Regarding the family

Please feel free to ask for a family meeting with a doctor if one has not been arranged for you. The first family meeting should occur within the first 24-48 hours after the patient is admitted to the ICU. Try to have at least two people attend these meetings.

Above all, remember to accord yourself the same care and respect being given to your loved one. Make your needs known to our ICU staff, whose training and mandate is to help families and friends, as well as their respective patients.

Please ask for help if you are not able to cope or manage under these stressful circumstances. If you feel you are having trouble coping with the stress of your loved one’s condition/ illness, please ask us for help. A social worker and spiritual health practitioner are available to help and support you through this.
