Expertise

Home to the very first ICU in Canada, Providence Health Care’s intensive care program is equipped to care for BC’s most critically ill patients. Our staff and physicians thrive on saving lives and making a difference to our patients and their families.

We are experts in kidney, heart and lung critical care, and welcome the most complex cases. We also support BC Women’s Hospital by accepting and caring for pregnant and post pregnancy women with complex health needs.

Our cross-departmental approach to care means that whether a patient is coming from surgery, emergency, cardiac, medicine or any other department within PHC, the patient experience is seamless. Outside of our organization, we are looked to by referring health providers who count on us to take extraordinary measures for their critically ill patients that are in need care in Vancouver.

We are the most research-intensive ICU in BC. If there is something new in ICU medicine, it’s being studied and introduced here – at the bedside, in our Research Challenge, on the floor. We follow best practice to ensure that while our treatment is always on the leading edge, we consistently deliver the highest quality of patient care.

Across our organization and within the ICU, our world-renowned researchers continually push the boundaries of knowledge, keeping us at the forefront of care in the treatment and management of critically ill patients in areas such as sepsis (life-threatening infection), ventilation management, HIV/AIDS and also cardiac and pulmonary care.
